Honey from China could be dangerous to your health

Several years ago a dangerous bacteria swept through the honeybee hives of China, forcing the beekeepers to make a choice - lose their hives or apply antibiotics. They chose the later, and created a terrible residue of dangerous antibiotic that is still showing up in American's honey.

Easy Popsicle Recipe - with special cancer fighting ingredient!

My favorite new recipe for a sweet summer treat – and it’s good for you!

Coconut Milk Cherry Popsicles

1 cup unsweetened light coconut milk

¼ cup filtered water

1 cup frozen cherries

1 ripe banana

1 tablespoon liquid chlorophyll*

http://astore.amazon.com/nutritionforempoweredwomen-20/detail/B000KITWYC

Blend all ingredients together until totally smooth and freeze in popsicle mold – perfect for after-school/after-work snacks!

*The chlorophyll is great for cleansing the blood and is a potent anti-cancer tool! Research studies have found that damage to DNA can be decreased as much as 55% through supplementation with chlorophyll at 100 milligrams, three times a day, for four months. This amount of chlorophyllin, 300 milligrams per day, is the same amount of chlorophyll found in one weighted ounce of spinach (a little over 1/2 cup of chopped raw spinach).

Be well,

Alex

Alex's Tricks and Favorite Energy Boosting Foods

Many of you will remember that I’m involved in several big projects right now:

-       writing a new nutrition and lifestyle book for the Dummies series

-       coaching the 8 Week Wellness and Detox Tele-Course

-       working with private clients to help them resolve their health concerns

-       potty-training and raising my 2 ½ year old son

-       speaking at schools and conferences

Whew! I could use a cup of coffee! Actually, that is how I used to think when I needed energy to get through the day. But constant caffeine use only lead me quickly down the rabbit-hole to major health problems, so now I use these foods on a regular basis to keep me focused, energized and working:

- leafy greens: at least 1 serving of leafy greens a day (broccoli, kale, spinach, bok choy, you name it!)

- water, water, water: drink at least 1 glass upon waking, 1 glass between breakfast and lunch and at least 1 between the hours of 2 PM and 5 PM.

- sprouts: full of energy, vitamin C and enzymes, these little beauties are easy to integrate into salads, sandwiches or stir-fry dishes

- keep an eye out for my secret list of "must-have" supplements!

Be well,

Alex

May 18th Healthy Chef Alex

A Personal Note from Alex

I’ve been hard at work writing book #2 (out this November!), cooking new recipes, and getting inspired by chanting. What? Chanting? Yes, a good friend invited me to an evening of yogic chanting with world famous performer Krishna Das here in New York City. The concert was so fun – people were singing along and the music was really uplifting, even if I don’t understand Sanskrit!

Getting inspired by the uplifting music reminded me of the work I’ve been doing to renew and revamp my own work. I’m almost ready to reveal my latest project, something very important to me and my dedication to helping people get healthy and create vibrant lives. I hope you’ll join me in the next month when I send out the announcement!

My top 4 tips on how to get inspired to make healthy changes today!

1. Watch a quick healthy cooking video on YouTube – there are hundreds of quick recipe videos on YouTube to help inspire healthy cooking! Check out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wb-jUafcMZY

2. Make your iPhone a healthy food detective – you can now download an easy app for your phone which will tell you which foods you MUST by organic, and other foods that you can save some money on by buying conventional. Download your app today:

http://www.foodnews.org/

3. Get moving! – instead of taking a coffee break at work today, take a hike! Leave your desk, grab a quick drink of water and walk around the building, office or even leave and head outside for a few minutes. A few minutes of walking will improve your blood flow, clear your mind, and erase the need for your afternoon hit of caffeine.

4. Bend and nap – If you’re having trouble getting to sleep at night, do a few stretches to relax your body. Hang over your toes, as far as you comfortably can, and just let your head and neck go. Stretch your hamstrings for ten seconds each, a few side bends on each side, and sit on the floor to reach forward to touch your toes. This will help get you back in your body and out of your head, making sleep easier.

Easy Health Tip and New Raw Dessert Recipe!

Are you passionate about raw foods?  Are you thinking, “raw foods? You mean carrot sticks and an apple?” Prefer traditional diets?  Follow plant-based nutrition?  What nutritional path have you chosen for good health?

If you answer is “I haven’t a clue!” then here is a great health tip to get you on the right track. Eating more raw fruits and veggies will naturally increase your energy and improve your digestion:

Start eating 1 raw meal a day. What do I mean by that?

Try eating only a big salad with loads of raw veggies (you can include diced avocado, nuts, seeds and oil cured olives in there for more heft and satisfaction) for either lunch or dinner. This will automatically give you the recommended daily intake of veggies you need – easily!

Another tip: skip the heavy salad dressing. Simply squeeze half a lemon and drizzle with extra virgin olive oil for healthy fats and the cleansing power of lemon.

A NEW RAW DESSERT RECIPE – JUST FOR YOU!

What’s the deal with raw foods? Why are all the stars and actors into eating this way? Well, look at them – their skin is glowing and clear (ex: Demi Moore, Sting and Angela Bassett) and their body’s are in top shape.

Here’s a simple way to work more raw foods into your diet: dessert!

RAW CASHEW PUDDING

2 cups RAW cashews

2 tsp vanilla
 extract

1/4 cups raw agave syrup

tiny pinch sea salt

1/2 cups water

Dump your cashews into the food process and process into a fine flour.  Add in the vanilla, agave, sea salt and half of the water into your processor.  This pudding is going to be thick, so it can be hard to get it all mixed up by the blades.  Add more water (no more than the 1/2 cup) to thin it out and pause every few seconds to scrape the sides with a spatula.

Eat fresh or refrigerate for later – will keep for 2 days in a tightly sealed container.

Obamas to Plant White House Vegetable Garden!

"Obamas to Plant White House Vegetable Garden"

On Friday, March 20th, 2009, 23 third graders will join First Lady Michelle Obama on the South Lawn of the White House to break ground on an 1100 square foot kitchen garden that will provide food for family dinners and formal dinners.

According to the New York Times:

The Obamas’ garden will have 55 varieties of vegetables grown from organic seedlings started at the executive mansion’s greenhouses.

And better still:

Almost the entire Obama family, including the president, will pull weeds, “whether they like it or not,” Mrs. Obama said laughing.

Ok, you can stop pinching yourself: you aren't dreaming this and an off batch of sauerkraut hasn't caused a rare case of lacto-fermentation-hallucination.

THEY ARE REALLY GOING TO DIG THIS GARDEN!

Health

Spring is coming! Yay!

But winter is still officially here. What does that mean to your health and home?

Start the spring cleaning early with a little fresh air.  Open windows on days that are warm enough to remove some of the built up indoor air pollution and get a few green plants for each room to help clean out the air.

One of my favorite books is “How To Grow Fresh Air” by Dr. B.C.Wolverton. It details how the air quality in your home can actually be worse for your health than walking the streets of Manhattan all day. There are many steps you can take: chose the right house plants to help filter your air, remove off-gassing materials and furniture from your home and stop using chemical air fresheners and petroleum wax candles.

For more information, visit: http://www.wolvertonenvironmental.com/book1.htm

Food

Why do we need leafy greens in our diet every day? They provide us with blood-cleansing chlorophyll, help to cleanse and strengthen the digestive tract with excellent fiber, provide amazing anti-cancer benefits (especially broccoli and kale!) and increase your energy. They are the food most often missing from the Western diet, and they can do the most to quickly turn around health woes.

My new favorite way to get more leafy greens into my diet is with a daily

GREEN SMOOTHIE!

3 bananas (or pears or apples, or a combination of those)

½ cup frozen cherries

4 large kale leaves, stems removed (or 1 large broccoli head, chopped small)

4 cups of filtered water

Blend it all together really well and drink throughout the day! You’ll be getting loads of raw green energy in an easy form and you’ll love it!

For more information and inspiration, read GREEN FOR LIFE by Victoria Boutenko or visit: http://www.greenforlife.com/ode.htm for more green smoothie recipes!

Life

I have been busy this winter with new clients, writing a new book (shhhh! I’ll tell you more soon!) and chasing after Laken. 2 year olds have incredible energy!

I’ll be accepting new clients in April, so keep an eye out for my next offer and calendar updates.

Be well!
